Let’s talk about relationships! 1. Are relationships all about other people?
When we talk about relationships, many people think about their spouse, their parents, their colleagues.
Most of us don’t realise that the first relationship that matters is our relationship to our self.
We often take this relationship for granted but the question is whether we understand things like:
Why do I behave this way?
Why do I think this?
What is it that I really believe deep inside myself about myself? about the world? about my place in the world?
How about what I believe about how others should relate to me? and about how I should relate to them?
The reality is: It all starts here.
But in a world that is so focused on doing, it is becoming harder and harder to know how to be.
I like to say we (people in our society, in the Western world more particularly) have become emotionally dis-abled. I insist on saying dis-abled, not unable - because the ability to be human, to be connected to our emotions, has been taken away from us by all the injunctions to DO instead of to BE.
And because we don’t know how to deal with whatever is going on for us…
We don’t know how to behave with others. How to be there with others.
